In 1 John 3:11-18, John describes 2 types of contrasting examples of the command to love one another (v. 11). I. John describes negative examples of hate. A. Cain hated his brother (v. 12). B. The world hates believers (v. 13). C. Believers who hate believers (vs. 14b-15). II. John describes positive examples of love. A. Jesus laid down His life for us (v. 16a). B. Believers love other believers. 1. Which gives us assurance (v. 14a). 2. By being willing to lay down our lives for believers (v. 16b). 3. By meeting the needs of other believers (v. 17). 4. By tangibly loving, rather than merely talking about love (v. 18).
