While God allowed for the practice of debt slavery amongst his people (indentured servitude) he required that all Jewish debt slaves be released after six years of service and given gifts by their prior masters. He reminded his people who might grumble at this that they were slaves once in Egypt and that He had mercifully released them from their bondage! Had he not done so, they would still have been slaves serving cruel task-masters.
We need to remember as Christians that we too were once all slaves - slaves of sin and the devil - and that we had a sin debt that we could never hope to repay. Jesus paid our 'ransom' with His own blood and we have been released from our bondage by God's grace!
