INTRODUCTION: The timing of this event presents a glorious picture of God’s work in the history of mankind. This lesson occurs after a series of sinful events on the part of the people of God. The people complained and lusted (Numbers chapter 11); Miriam and Aaron joined in the murmuring (Numbers chapter 12); the spies delivered an evil report (Numbers chapter 13); the Israelites failed to enter the land (Numbers chapter 14); and Korah rebelled (Numbers chapter 16). So what did God do to follow these many failures? The narrative follows with several glorious pictures of His Son, Jesus Christ. In other words, God’s answer to man’s failure was to foreshadow His Son showing that He is the only answer for man’s propensity to follow the flesh. The rod of Aaron is one in a series of events demonstrating that the only reconciliation is found in the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ.
CONCLUSION: Christ, as the rod of God, is the eternal source of 1) power; 2) punishment; 3) protection. We must look to Him for all things.
P—POINT: The main theme of the lesson  Man at his very best is simply vanity. Every opportunity taken to excel outside of God miserably fails. It is in the midst of these failures that God points us to a rod that represents to us His Son. Man’s inadequacy will always point to the sufficiency of the Lord Jesus Christ. S—STORY: A synopsis of the lesson  Aaron’s priesthood had been called into question, and the Lord decided to end the dispute. He called for a rod from each tribe, and promised to verify His choice by the life found in a dead rod. When the dust settled, God showed Aaron to be His man.
