In Col 2:6 the instruction Paul gives to the church is that they "walk" in Christ in the same way as they received him. How does anyone receive Christ other than by grace through faith? We therefore walk by grace through faith in him. Only in that way will we avoid becoming captive to human traditions and the "elemental spirits" which would seek to set up an alternative way of salvation, which is no true salvation but an enslavement to rules and regulations that control us by guilt. Instead, Paul emphasises the completeness of who Christ is and what he has done. In him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily and through his death on the cross we have been made clean and forgiven all our sins and he has triumphed over all evil powers that want to dominate us. We need to look nowhere else for true life. Through union with Christ we also are made complete and we cannot, must not seek security in something else whether that might be religious rituals, a code of behaviour or philosophy.
