We are still dwelling on the blessed benefits of reading, studying, meditating upon, and keeping God's Word. The Bible is so valuable! It is more profitable than much fine gold and more desirable than the freshest honey. It surpasses anything that money can buy.
In our last meditation we noted a benefit that David expressed negatively in the first part of verse 11 “Moreover by them [God's revealed judgments and precepts] is thy servant warned…” Thank God for the warnings of Scripture! It is God's way of getting our attention and telling us, “Don't hurt yourself! Don't get burned!” The Bible warns us of the temptations of the world, of our own weaknesses and sinful tendencies, and of false teachers.
But God – like the wise and loving Father that He is – also employs positive reinforcement with His children. He rewards us when we keep His Word.
Heaven itself is not a “reward.” No one can earn salvation. The Bible says that eternal life is the free “gift of God” (Rom. 6:23). If our hearts have truly been changed by God's grace, we will want to go to Heaven so that we won't sin any more – not because God owes it to us for not sinning down here.
Yet God will not be a debtor to us. He is a “rewarder of them that diligently seek Him” by keeping His Word. Does keeping God's Word reflect your taste, or just your task?
