The contemporary Church is suffering from an identity crisis. And yet it would be a mistake to regard this as a purely modern phenomenon. The Church's struggle for self-identity is nothing new; it began in the first century and has continued in every era up to the present day. The reason is the Church's "other-worldly" nature: It defies natural human conception and categories and so is continually misconstrued as people seek to define, understand and order it in accordance with natural thinking and convention. The problem isn't hopeless, however, but it can only be resolved as believers begin to rethink what it means to be Christians. The answer to the Church's identity-crisis begins with the recognition in its members that Christianity isn't about a new conviction or new commitment, but a new creation. The Church is the foremost expression of the reality of the new creation that Christ inaugurated by His redeeming and restoring work at Calvary. More specifically, the Church is the tangible manifestation of the new humanity that has its source and substance in the New Adam and the transforming power of His Spirit.
