When we follow vanity we become vain, empty, devoid of what is truly life. The remedy of to such vanity is the light of revelation, the created real around us, (natural revelation) and the Scriptures of God (special revelation)...these bring us back to who God is, all that He has done for the sinner and that He requires of us.
