God Glorified in Man's Dependence (1 Cor 1:29-31) Exposition The learned Greeks & their great philosophers did not know God, but God revealed himself in the gospel, which they called foolishness (1 Cor 1:27). He tells us why: That no flesh should glory in His Presence.
1. God's aim in the way he's ordained that our redemption should take place: man should not glory in himself, but only in God (v 29,31)
2. How he achieves this goal in our redemption: by making men absolutely & immediately dependent upon God in that work for all good (v30).
Doctrine: God is glorified in work of redemption because we have an absolute & universal dependence on him.
1. Absolute & universal dependence of redeemed on God. We're dependent on him for everything & in every way. We have all our good from, through, and in him.
2. God is glorified in work of redemption because we have great & universal dependence on him. The more dependent on him we understand ourselves to be, the more glorious he appears to us, & the more glory & respect he has from us.
Application 1. Consider marvelous wisdom of God in work of redemption. 2. Doctrines & schemes of theology that contradict or oppose this dependence on God steal his glory & thwart his design in our redemption. 3. One reason why our redemption is thru faith: in nature of faith is felt, conscious acknowledgement of our absolute dependence on God. 4. Exhortation to exalt God alone & ascribe to him all glory of redemption.
