Who is the author of this birth? God is (Of his own will). If there is going to be any salvation, any true conversion, then God must work to open the hearts of men. People believe that anyone can and/or will choose Christ if we can just reach their heart. But the truth is that only God can reach the heart and bring life.
Imagine a child who loved his father, loved to do what his father does, and enjoyed being in his father’s family. He would not choose another as his father, especially one who was diametrically opposed to his own father’s ideals. Well, in the same way, the devil’s children will not choose another father, unless and until they have been born again to a new Father. In the deadness of our sins, our dead soul, following the course of this world, following the design of Satan, dominated by a spirit of rebellion, is in peril by nature, and by nurture, by deeds and desires.
Are you born again because you believe or do you believe because you are born again? The answer is as clear as this text: It is by the will of God that people are born again.
