Paul begins this verse with a solemn warning: 'Be not deceived; God is not mocked'. Have we been deceived by sin and the allure of this world?
He then explains a frightening principle: we will reap what we sow. Every action in life is a form of sowing, and we either sow to the flesh or to the Spirit. From birth, our sinful nature leads us to sow to the flesh, indulging in desires that lead to corruption.
However, Paul also presents a faithful promise. If we sow to the Spirit — enabled by His power and seeking to please Him — we will reap eternal rewards. Though the path of sowing to the Spirit may be difficult and at times wearying, the ultimate reward is beyond measure.
Recognising that we all fall short of this perfect standard, Paul directs us to a free provision. Jesus Christ lived a flawless life, sowing only to the Spirit. If we place our trust in Him, He takes the punishment for the corrupt harvest we have sown, while we receive the perfect harvest that He has sown on our behalf.
