If one word could define the life of Isaac, it would be the word 'promise'.
Isaac was the son of promise, born to Abraham and Sarah when they were well advanced in age, fulfilling God's promise to them. He was the one through whom many other promises would be realised. Isaac also dwelt in the land of promise, where the Lord had assured him of great blessing, even in the face of famine and hostility from the Philistines.
The Lord appears to Isaac, confirming five essential promises in verses 2 and 3. We see these promises tested when Isaac, out of fear, lies about his relationship with Rebekah, yet experiences God's sovereign protection despite his own failings.
Lastly, we witness the fulfillment of the promised harvest. Though it may have seemed futile to Isaac to sow seed in enemy territory, he acted in obedience and faith, and God rewarded him with an hundredfold return.
As we reflect on this account of Isaac, we uncover important spiritual lessons that apply to our own lives today.
