Jeremiah is known as the weeping prophet. His message was one of judgment and despair for Israel, for she had rebelled against God and refused to return to Him.
And his message was completely ignored. He was persecuted, jailed, and people plotted to take his life.
And then in the midst of it all, God suddenly revealed to Jeremiah His glorious New Covenant of graceful salvation!
God Himself stated the problem: Israel broke His old covenant given to Moses, and would not obey Him. They had done so over and over again, with God judging and restoring them, only to have them repeat their rebellion.
Jeremiah must have known that Israel would never be able to obey God's Law, and never would. God was so very good to Israel, yet was insulted by disobedience.
No doubt Jeremiah rejoiced in God's New Covenant, for in it there were no requirements placed on God's people! It was a unilateral covenant, in which God promised to perform everything for His people.
He would put His law in their hearts, causing them to obey and believe Him. He would be their God, and they would be His people. He would not remember their sins against them ever again.
Jesus' message was similar to Jeremiah's: you are still not obeying God!
But when Jesus ordained the Lord's Table, He explained that His blood shed would execute the New Covenant. Now we can understand how God can take away our sins and never punish them in us - because of the substitute sacrifice of our blessed Redeemer!
So long as sinners are under God's wrath and judgment for sin, they can never obey and never submit. But by the blood of Jesus, reconciliation is made. Now we know the Lord. Now we rejoice to obey!
