Since believers are called to pursue and be perfected in self-control which they already possess (Gal. 5v22β23), they/we must be deliberate in the exercise of it. Self-control is by definition: self-mastery. This self-mastery that is guided and governed by "the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence β II Pet. 1v3.
