God comes to Man. John 1:1-14 The divinity, humanity, and work of Jesus Christ.John begins his story of Jesus by stating that Jesus was and is none other than God himself. His story precedes history, and His story is the light by which all other narratives must be read.In the verses and chapters to come, John will tell us much about the life of Jesus.John was a Jewish boy, and he says – Jesus is the Word, or the Communication of God.In the Old Testament, since God is not a visible, physical being, He revealed Himself through His "Word". He not only existed in eternity past, but He was with God. Jesus was no mere man, though He did become a man. He was not just a Jew, though He was born into the seed of Abraham. Jesus was co-equal with God himself. He was and (because God cannot change) still is, God! If we fast-forward from here, in John 1:1, to the cross where Jesus the Word was crucified, we understand.John tells us He is the fullest revelation of God, the second person of the eternal Godhead, and He is the fountain from which everything else has sprung! Jesus came from eternity into history. He lived in the world He made and died for the world He loved. He arose from the dead so that folks like us who are dying might find life in Him who will never die! |
