Spiritual warfare requires the preparation of truth, the protection of faith and righteousness, and control over our thoughts. It can also involve hand to hand fighting with Satan, and for that we need the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. Speech is someone expressing themselves - the Bible is God expressing himself. So it has an effect, and it shows what he is like. Through his Word God: creates, destroys, comforts, and convicts. In Revelation Jesus is portrayed as having a 'sharp two-edged sword' in his mouth. In the days of his flesh he used the Bible to settle controversies and silence his enemies. At Pentecost it was the message (not the tongues) that convicted and converted the people. Stephen brought conviction to his persecutors so that they could not bear to hear what he said. We must use the Bible in every spiritual battle. In temptation we must quote it to ourselves, to Satan, and to God (so he comes to our aid). Likewise if Satan tries to intimidate. And when we are engaged in a battle for the truth - 'Thus says the Lord'. The approach of death is another time when we must use God's Word; when John Knox was dying he asked his wife to read John 17 - 'where I first cast my anchor'. What scripture brought you to faith in Christ? Use it. when we quote the Bible we may feel very weak; but the strength is Christ's, for it is 'the sword of the Spirit', and Satan can never resist the authority of God.
