In Mark 10 Jesus applies his teaching of self-sacrifice to some everyday, material things that we encounter in this life: marriage, children, and possessions. Not every disciples of Jesus will carry a literal cross nor will every disciple become a martyr. However, every disciple, including us, will need to sacrifice something in following Christ. In verses 1-12, Jesus applies this to the issue of marriage. While others, such as the Pharisees, emphasized finding a way out of marriage, Jesus elevates marriage, putting it back in its rightful place as God intended.
