The night before He died, Jesus taught His disciples to love one another as He had loved them. This command certainly applies to all of us who name the name of Christ. Jesus knew that we are not typically motivated to love as He loved us. He also knew that we are not even able to love as He loved us. Even the most willing among us cannot love as Jesus loved. Yet Jesus gave this command. How could Jesus command us to do something we are incapable of doing? He does so based upon the character of His Father. Obeying this command is not about you or your ability or inclination to love others. It's about the character of God. God pours His love out on us and transforms our lives. We begin with an understanding of how God loves us before we even think about loving others.
