We continue in the series “Interactions of Christ” with our first interaction that includes a stern response from the Lord, but with good cause. Verse 5 explains some who asked him “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?” It was a question that was centered on finding fault—a deadly practice that can become a sinful source of joy in judging. We also see how those asking this question were playing God—how their traditions actually overruled the commandments that God gave, with example given in verses 9-13 of trading the command to love your parents into something optional. For this, Jesus calls them plainly “hypocrites.” Finally, pastor Brame explains “seeing truth” in that when we are really seeking to love God and keep his commandments, we’ll be sensitive to our heart’s intension far more than outward actions. As is often said, the heart of the matter is the matter of the heart. Listen for more on this important passage from the Bible.
