Amen is actually a Hebrew word and it appears in the Greek N.T un-translated and we often use the word un-translated ourselves. Only we usually use the word at the end of our prayers or to affirm our agreement with a truth just stated by another. The preacher quotes John 3:16 and someone says “Amen”. This “amen” is clearly a strong affirmation of the truth just stated. This practice has biblical precedent. James Montgomery Boice comments on the word “amen” as it is found in the N.T.
“In the New Testament the word is found in 127 verses, in some of them more than once since Jesus frequently repeated the word in his use of it. In seventy-six of these, “amen” comes at the beginning of the sentence, and in each case…it is God who is speaking. In forty-eight other verses “amen” occurs at the end of the sentence, and in these cases man is speaking. This thought is tremendous, for it means that when God speaks, God prefaces his remarks with the affirmation that what he says is truthful. “I do solemnly affirm that what I am about to say is true,” says God. After, he says it his people then use the word as an echo (“Amen”), by which they mean, “We acknowledge and believe that God is faithful.”
The truth of God is the foundation of all truth and of all life. The superstructure of our faith is his reliability. He says, “Amen.” We echo, “Amen, amen,” (pg. 665/John).
When Jesus says amen, amen up front it is because He is God incarnate and what comes out of his mouth is firm and reliable. It is the truth and nothing but the truth. He is telling us that what he is about to say is firm-it is solid-it is reliable-you can bet your souls and eternity upon it.
