The Samaritans were of mixed-heritage and worshiped false Gods. Even more, when the Jews were persecuted the Samaritans denied any kinship or heritage with them.. Then the Romans legalized the Samaritan religion and they prospered under Roman rule as opposed to the Jews who were persecuted and oppressed. Lots of bitterness folks…… Let’s go back to the Lawyer in verse 29, Jesus gives the two commandments……..but it says “but he, willing to justify himself said, “who is my neighbor”?……… why would he ask this? He didn’t want to mess with wretched people! He didn’t want the hassle. But he didn’t want to feel guilty about it either. So why did Jesus use the Samaritan illustration? He chose Samaritans because they were the people who irritated the lawyer the most! Who irritates you the most?
