The Apostle John was the last to write a gospel of the life of the Messiah. In this gospel, unlike the writers of the other three "synoptic" gospels, John to write about his friend, the Messiah. In this first chapter, therefore, there are no genealogies or records of his birth and young life. Rather John begins with the heart of the matter - who is this one called Jesus? What is HIs true place amongst men? He does this by declaring the "Logos" (the Word) was, in the beginning, with God and, in fact, was God. The Logos, John writes is eternal, without beginning or end. After revealing the ministry of John the Baptizer, He differentiates between John and the Logos saying, John was not the light, the Logos is the True Light who came to all men with an opportunity to become Sons of God (John 1.12). Finally, the Logos became flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld HIs glory. This introduction is John's attempt at revealing the mystery of God, in that God came in the person of Jesus, to save the world. |
