The word “redeem” had a special significance to the religious Jew of Peter's day. His mind would immediately associate the word with the concept of a “kinsman-redeemer” who would purchase back an indentured relative that had fallen on hard times. A payment of money was made in this transaction. The relative was now free to return to his family and work for himself.
Peter stresses the beautiful analogy that the believer is “redeemed” – not by corruptible things like “silver and gold,” but by the “precious blood of Christ.” Nothing but the shed blood of His sinless Son can satisfy the holiness of God and meet His just requirement for our sins. This redemption is total and eternal!
Is the blood of Christ “precious” to you? Are you laboring for holiness in your own strength? Avail yourself today of this “fountain for sin and uncleanness.” The blood still speaks both to God and to your own conscience.
