The use of Haggai's words in this passage of Hebrews is significant. The prophet's original words had their fulfilment in his own time (at the return of the exiles from Babylon), but the complete fulfilment of what this event presaged is now upon us who benefit from the blood of the new covenant. We should not be surprised at the shaking and quaking of nations and at the dissolution of human empires. It is only by all things being shaken that we find the kingdom given to us in Christ cannot be shaken. In view of this we are exhorted to live and love in true faith and hope.
