LESSONS WE LEARN BY THE DRYING BROOK

Rev. A.J. Ogden

In 1 Kings 17:1-7, God commands Elijah to go down to a brook called Cherith, sit there and be fed by ravens, because a long drought was on the way. He had water from the brook and food from the sky for a certain time. Then as the brook of God’s provision began to dry up, he was commanded to move on to Zarephath where he would be fed by a widow woman that God had prepared. God would always provide for his servant, but his way of doing so would change from time to time.

If your brook seems to be drying up, fear not, perhaps God will work out a new and different way to sustain you. Some of us are sitting by the brook of sickness, suffering and pain. Dear friends, it won’t always be this way.

Some are sitting by the brook called prosperity, but know this brook can go dry any time. But when it does, the same God who made your money flow is able to take care of you.

Change is sure, but God is still on his throne. Many today who were very successful sit now by a drying brook and wonder how to make it. Just tune in to heaven’s station and say, “Lord, where did I go wrong? Please help me.”

Some have a drying brook because when God was blessing them, they stole God’s tithe money and were dishonest with the Maker of all wealth. The Bible tells us in Matthew 6:33, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” You don’t ever profit when you cheat on God.

Sometimes our brook dries up and blessings fail to come because we leave God out of all things in our lives. If you have repented of your sins and been born again into the family of God, let the world know it. Be a good witness, and live for him like he is everything. He is! Treat God like you want him to treat you. When we appreciate the one who blesses more than we do his blessings, then we can expect his blessings.

Do you love the one who blesses with all your heart?
