“Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.” Proverbs 31:8
Most wisdom regarding the tongue includes a warning against speaking too much or too quickly. But there are times that demand speaking out. In this instance, it is on behalf of those whose voices have been marginalized or silenced. Pacifism is not Christianity. The very nature of Christ’s activity on earth is that He spoke out to the Father on behalf of those whose guilt had marginalized their voices before the throne of judgment. While we cannot atone for sin, we can follow the example of Christ by displaying both justice and mercy in speaking out for those who cannot speak for themselves. It may be as simple as admonishing the bully on the playground. Or it may be as complex as faithful ministry, providing hope and counsel to the unwed mother. Wherever God has given us a voice of influence, we should wield it wisely, with compassion and resolve.
