Live By Grace Like Noah By Trusting God (CHO-02)
For us Americans, the concept of "lord" and "sovereign" are a foreign concept. We see it in old Camelot movies or referred to in episodes of Downton Abbey. Yet, the concept died in America with the American Revolution and has further been depleted with today's viewpoint of "radical individualism". Both terms are intertwined and means a ruler who has the right and preeminence to decree and be followed. It means one who owns property of various kinds and is able to exercise supreme authority over it. When correct identification and subjection is given to the legitimate lord/sovereign it benefits both parties; yet ultimately proper following doesn't diminish the lord.
So when the Bible talks about the Lord God and that He is Sovereign, our take away can not always be as forceful as it was to men like Paul (Romans 1:1), Peter (2 Peter 1:1), James (James 1:1), and Jude (Jude 1:1) who identify themselves as "doulos" in the Greek. Many Bibles translate this as "bond-servant" which is fair but the can better be translated as "slave" meaning one who gives himself up to another's will.
That is Christ call to us throughout the New Testament. Like in Luke 14:26, we are called to hate our very life in order to be Christ's disciples. Is that what your devotion looks like? Are you a slave for the Sovereign Lord Jesus Christ?
