How is honor, the acknowledgement of a job well done, of a life lived well, achieved? Simply stated, honor is achieved when honor isn’t the goal. The goal of the proud is to be acknowledged with honor. The goal of the humble is to please God. The pastor who desires honor will test the winds of opinion before determining action. He will stew when honor is given to another. The mother who desires honor will constantly compare herself with others, never able to focus on the actual work of faithful mothering. But the pastor who simply desires to please God recognizes that acknowledgement is a miniscule award compared with witnessing his congregation gradually develop into maturity through his faithful ministry. The mother who simply desires to please God is unburdened from the cares of trying to measure up. She does the best she can with the resources she has, depending on God to produce the fruit and to cover her mistakes. It is these individuals, the humble, faithful servants of God, who find themselves in places of honor, not by their own design but by God’s grace.
