Timetable or Time-Appointed?
“He hath appointed a day, in the which He will judge the world in righteousness by that Man Whom He hath ordained” (Acts 17:31)
One preacher derogatorily condemned justification at, by, through and in connection with the cross as a “theological timetable”. Yet, the Scriptures often speak of a time-appointed, as Paul said: “He [God] has appointed a day”. Consider:
God “appointed the foundations of the earth” (Proverbs 8:29)
God “appointed the moon for seasons” (Psalms 104:19)
God “appointed a law in Israel” (Psalms 78:5)
God “appointed unto Me” a kingdom, Christ said (Luke 22:29)
God: “at the time appointed…Sarah shall have a son” (Genesis 18:14)
God: “the vision is yet for an appointed time…” (Habakkuk 2:3).
The appointed time was accomplished (Romans 1:17; Galatians 2:16; 3:11-12; Hebrews 10:38).
The Old Testament was a period “under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the Father…But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of woman, made under the law” (Galatians 4:3-4).
What was accomplished at that time-appointed?
Peter stated: “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the Just for the unjust…” (1 Peter 3:18). Consider: 1st, when Christ died He was just having no sin; 2nd, when Christ died the elect were unjust being guilty of both imputed sin and actual sins (Romans 3:23). Christ died for Abraham, David, Isaiah, Paul, Peter and all of God’s elect at once.
The timeless, eventless, eternal justification view is that God justified when He elected before the foundation of the world. Is that compatible with Peter’s statement? Obviously, not! When the Savior laid down His life, the elect were unjust. At the “appointed time”, Christ established righteousness, which God accepted and imputed to the account of His elect. In that exclusive declaration at the cross, they were justified.
