"When the wicked rise, men hide themselves: but when they perish, the righteous increase." Proverbs 28:28
This passage speaks of the tremendous impact that leadership has over a people. When oppressive, wicked individuals rise to power, the spirit of the people becomes squelched and seemingly impenetrable opposition drives a society into submission and despair. We see this oppressive scenario repeated time and time again throughout scripture; and we also see the freedom and joy that comes as God delivers His people from wicked leaders. So, how can we respond to this passage in a way that demonstrates wisdom? Prayer! We cannot grow weary in praying for those in power, as well as praying for God to raise up leaders who are devoted to righteousness. Only God can turn the king’s heart, and only God raises up earthly authorities; so may we pray to Him for mercy.
