Your Sins are Forgiven You

“I write unto you, little children because your sins are forgiven you for His Name's sake”

(1 John 2:12)

This is one of the most positive and propositional statements found in the Scriptures. The hope and security derived from it are immense and unspeakable. The aged apostle used “write” or “written” in ten verses of his first Letter. He was like the psalmist who said, “my tongue is the pen of a ready writer” (Psalm 45:1). This call to attention has the effect of saying, “Verily, Verily” or Truly, Truly. He spoke not to the world at large but to “you”, meaning those who confessed the Gospel. Consider:

“because your sins are forgiven you” – Forgiveness is a past, completed act; thus, it’s properly said “because”. Also, it is a present reality; therefore, it’s properly said “are forgiven”. Man’s most fundamental problem is identified – “sins”. This includes imputed sin (Romans 5:12); and actual sins (Romans 3:23). “Forgiveness” declares sins were sent away and will never be regarded by God. “for His name’s sake” – He spoke of Christ Jesus. His “Name” represents the fullness of His Person and Work. Jesus said: “For this is My blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins” (Matthew 26:28).
