Out of the Abundance of the Heart

O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” (Matthew 12:34)

Harsh words addressed to the unconverted religionists and preachers of Christ’s day. They pretended to preach God’s righteousness, but in essence preached evil things in that their hearts were yet unregenerate, and therefore preached the evil of their own works, although the very manifestation of True Righteousness, (God in the flesh), was right before them and yet they were blind. You can’t preach Christ if He has never been revealed in your heart. The abundance that flows out of men’s mouths is a revelation of the heart.

With much speaking and preaching today, and many voices that are speaking to curious listeners, what distinguishes one good message from heresy? How can we know that the word is from the LORD?

1. Take Heed What You Hear- (Mark 4:24)

Some think that anyone who preaches and mentions the name of Christ must be speaking for and of THE LORD. And yet, our LORD, in instructing the disciples warned them to pay particular attention to what HE was teaching them! Hearing HIM! That takes the work of the Spirit to bring home to the heart the very WORD of God (Christ) and reveal Him in them, not just to them. Subsequently, they, as communicators of the Word (Christ,) will mete out to others exactly as they have received from the LORD.

With what measure ye mete, it shall be measured unto you,”The more one is taught of the LORD, by the Spirit, from the heart, and the Seed (Christ) is sown through the preaching, there will always be an needful measure of grace, wisdom, and knowledge given by the Spirit for the next time, again and again. “unto you that hear, shall more be given”- The preacher need never wonder or question whether he will ever run dry of Seed to sow in preaching. As infinite a subject as Christ is, and as inestimable His work for sinners, and as exhaustless the depths of the mysteries of His glory, how could the Seed ever run dry. But we are to look to the LORD for the substance and the manner of delivery as HE is pleased to bring Christ to mind and heart from the written inspired Word.

2. I Believed and Therefore I Have Spoken-(2 Corinthians 4:13)

Believing on the LORD Jesus Christ is a grace of the Spirit of God, or else none would believe.
To believe is to be cast entirely on the LORD Jesus Christ alone as the Savior, Redeemer, Justifier, Sanctifier, and Glorifier of the Father’s eternally chosen sinners out of a fallen world (1 Corinthians 1:30-31). Those believe who were ordained from eternity, to eternal life (Acts 13:48). God-given faith is to the singular, solitary glory of the LORD Jesus Christ alone (Acts 20:21). Those so exercised by the Spirit and given grace to believe speak of Christ and His finished work for them alone. Many preach with rarely a reference to the LORD Jesus, or when they do He is a sub-point, but not the beginning, middle and end of the message. Those whom God has given His grace to believe can’t but speak of Christ.
