Why Won’t Sinners Come to Christ?
(John 5:39-44
39 Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me. 40 And ye will not come to Me, that ye might have life. 41 I receive not honour from men. 42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. 43 I am come in My Father's name, and ye receive Me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. 44 How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?
Intellectual blindness and unbelief- v. 39 . Our LORD Jesus was speaking to religious, moral, intellectual leaders of His day, who held a high view both of Scripture and God. He said of them to ‘Search the Scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life…’ These men had a reverence for the written word that they were charged to copy and preserve in it original inspired form, and a high view of God, as they perceived Him, and yet, with all of their knowledge and skill in the languages, they remained blind to the Christ of the Scriptures. They had a zeal, but not according to knowledge, ( Romans 10:1-3 ) . What they considered their strength, (knowledge of the Scriptures, reasoning, study, and a self-produced lifestyle of morality) was actually their obstacle, as many today, never having been taught by the Spirit ( Ephesians 4:18 ), and not being submitted to the One true righteousness of God, His Son the LORD Jesus, and finished work accomplished at Calvary.A will that is bound up in hatred and unbelief- v. 40. ,’ which is just a deluded figment of the natural mind. Clearly, our LORD Jesus did not teach it, but rather denounced it as the reason that they did not come to Him. “Ye WILL NOT come to Me.” If all the work of salvation were finished except for the believing and coming, sinners would lie dead at salvation’s doors, unable to even reach up and turn the handle.InJohn 6:44 , ‘No man can come to Me, except the Father which hath sent Me draw him:’ S inners in their natural estate prefer the honor of men- ’ ‘I am of Paul, and another, I am of Apollos;’ ( 1 Corinthians 3:4-6 ). ’ They have not the love of God in them- John 17:3 1 John 4:10
