Taking The Shield of Faith
“Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked”
(Ephesians 6:16)
I was interested to read recently in a magazine of all of the new types of protective, light weight armor that our military is developing to protect our soldiers in battle and keep them alive against the various types of bullets and bombs of the enemy.
Imagine if each soldier had to come up with their own protection, fabricate it, all the while trying to do battle. It would be certain death.
When the Scriptures exhort the child of God to TAKE the shield of faith, it is evident that faith is not something that is within him/her; it has been created and then given (issued) to him/her exactly fitted for whatever enemy he/she faces.
But what or rather WHO is the shield of faith?
Faith has but one object, and that is the precious LORD and Savior Jesus Christ.
The LORD told Abraham in Genesis 15:1-“I am thy shield.’
In the face of the enemy’s attacks, whether it by our sin, the accusations of our conscience, or of our acquaintances, or Satan himself, it is the crucified, risen, and ascended Savior who is our Propitiation, whose person and work answer every sin or accusation on our behalf, (I John 2:1).
Because we are depraved by nature, and ever weak in our flesh, how often do the fiery darts of the enemy pierce our minds and hearts, and we must acknowledge in ourselves that those accusations are true.
We are cursed in all we do and justly so.
How quickly the fiery darts of the enemy tend to burn up our peace, hope, consolation and joy of the soul. Yet, in holding up as a shield, the redeeming, justifying work of the LORD Jesus, we rest.
The LORD Himself gives us the strength, mind, wisdom, and grace to hold the shield of FAITH. It isn’t anything in us.
Our Savior’s blood paid for every sin of God’s chosen ones, and His blood cleanses from all sin. By His blood we are justified (acquitted) from all things.
Having earned and established that righteousness for His own, God, upon completion of Christ’s work justified at one time, in one sacrifice, every one of His children.
There is NOW (upon completion of His finished work) NO condemnation, (Romans 8:1).
Christ, the Substitute is the shield of FAITH!
