The Blessing Of This Side Of The Cross (HFG-10)
It's not fair! For those of you with little ones this might be a familiar cry. Maybe you've heard that life isn't fair - maybe even said with the same temperament as a toddler. Fairness is something we strive for; in our sports, in our education, in our politics we are trying to find this focal point on the board where everything is balanced. But we don't really want fairness, do we? We want to get the promotion over the older employee. We want to get out of the speeding ticket. We don't want the foul called on us. We don't want to give up so others can have what we possess. We don't want others to get a free pass. It's just not fair! We don't want fairness, we want mercy (having what isn't earned). It's the other guy who should get what's coming to him. It's just not fair.
The great thing about God is that He perfectly exhibits the characteristic of fairness. The Creator made the rules and you broke them. It's only fair that you are punished. You knew speeding would result in consequences the same why you know hatred and lying and lust and envy would result in. But God also perfectly exhibits the characteristic of mercy. This in shown in Scripture as "but" or "however" statements. "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)
