Many observers have noted that one of the surprising losers in this age of instant communication is communication. Whether the culprit is busyness, superficiality, or just selfish neglect, meaningful relationships are on the decline. Social media provides the unsatisfying substitute of superficial relationships as we paint a carefully crafted image to display to our “friends.” But this crafted image and the “like” affirmations don’t really meet our needs. Friendship is a gift from God. The heart, or the center of a person’s being, is sweetened through meaningful, Godly relationship. Sometimes, that occurs through counsel that confronts, words hard to receive because they chasten. It is very important to understand this: confrontation is always more readily received when a relationship of genuine affection already exists. At times, we may recognize areas of concern in the direction of another person but if we have never showed genuine care for them previously, it is doubtful that our words of warning will be effective now.
