A House of Prayer for all the Nations

Fridays are Vazquez nights. Every week for years these precious Mexicans have hosted a meeting in their inner-city Chicago apartment. We are anywhere from 5 to 25, but always international. The Mexicans, the "gringo" (me) and his Korean wife, some Filipinos, a Somalian. And a lot more. I'd like to take you all there every week, share a Mexican meal with you, sing, pray and all the rest. Best I can do is give you some insights that come out during the lesson time, which is normally mine. Tonight we had a Romanian guest speaker, so I didn't get to teach, and I'm especially eager to give out some Word.

We've been going through the book of I Peter. You'll have to join us mid-stream. Turn to chapter 3, verse 12, where Peter talks about leading an exemplary life in front of the Gentiles. Strange, don't you think, that an apostle of Christ would call unbelievers "Gentiles" ? While thinking about that it occurred to me that every other religion you come out of, you must change your name. If you were a Buddhist, you are no longer a Buddhist. If you were a Muslim, you are no longer a Muslim. But if you were a Jew, as were the people Peter is addressing, you remain a Jew when you come to Christ. It was to the Jews that the Savior, the Gospel, the Church, all of it belonged at first. Christianity arises from Israel. Christ is the Messiah promised to Israel. And in Peter's thinking there is still only one people of God: Israel. Paul mentions a tree with many branches, a tree called Israel. The original branches rotted and dropped off, and Gentile branches were grafted in.It made the top of the tree look different. Maybe even strange. But the bottom, the trunk and roots, are still Israel. We cannot change the tree, the tree changes us into the commonwealth of Israel, God's only people.
I know the law is not ours any longer. I know the ceremonies and sacrifices are passed into history. But God has only one people when it is all over.
That's one thought from that verse. I was struck by the phrase "day of visitation", too. Jesus will visit this planet one day to judge it. According to Peter, all will tell the truth in that day. Today they lie about you, saying that your profession of faith is an evil thing. On that day they will look at that same profession and speak the truth about it, for every knee will bow before Jesus.
Of course that is assuming that they have not found evil, true evil, in your life. That truth will come out too. I was thinking, what if, today, you were to enter into a room where sat all of your present neighbors. As you take the center seat, they one by one would be asked to testify as to what kind of a neighbor you are. What kind of a meeting would that be for you? Embarrassing? Refreshing? Such a day is coming, Peter says. So keep your conduct honorable. "Clean up your act." Let them see Jesus in you.
Peter goes on to be specific about how you do that, but our time is up for this week. Meet me at the house of prayer next Friday!
