“Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.” Proverbs 27:1
It should not be a surprise that the writers of Scripture continually emphasize the limited, uncertain nature of time given our propensity to take time for granted. There are several truths Christians should commit themselves to as relates to time:
Avoid procrastination.Work while it is day, for the night cometh when no man can work.
Appreciate today – Dreams of a better tomorrow can become idols that prevent the enjoyment of God’s blessings today. This is the day the Lord hath made…
Humility – “if the Lord will…”The Scriptural examples of those whose future plans were derailed were men and women filled with pride and self-confidence.
Alertness – This may just be another antonym of procrastination, but spiritual alertness is intertwined with the understanding that the day of salvation (repentance, confession, renewal) is today, not some undetermined point in the nebulous future.
Anticipation – The limited nature of time reminds and fills with longing for the time when time will be no more.Eternity compels the heart of the Christian with joy while salving the sorrows of today.
