The “rule of law” is frequently mentioned by our founding fathers. Though that phrase is not found in the Constitution, the word “rules” or “rule” is found 8 times. The Declaration of Independence list the grievance that the king “refused his Assent to Laws.” In that Declaration they appealed “to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions.” In other words, our founding fathers recognized that God is our supreme authority. The concept that earthly rulers must rule, not by self-will & might, but under the rule of law, is found in 2 Chron. 23:11. When Joash was made king over Judah, they “put the crown on him, [and] gave him the testimony….” The “Testimony” refers to the Law of God, especially the 10 Commandments (Ex. 25:16; 31:18; Ps. 19:7). Thus, the King was to rule by the law of God, not his own will. What they did was based on Deut. 17:18-19, “When he is seated on his royal throne, he is to write a copy of this instruction [God’s Law] for himself on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests. It is to remain with him, and he is to read from it all the days of his life, so that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, to observe all the words of this instruction, and to do these statutes.” It appears to me that our current political leadership, including the Supreme Court, is not under law, but over law. They enforce laws that line up with their own political views, and either reject or refuse to enforce laws that do not. That will lead to rule by might, not by law. That is the rule of tyranny, against which our founding fathers fought. Fortunately, God is the Supreme Ruler, and those who violate His moral and just laws will be held accountable. Activists can push to change laws based on God’s moral law, including the fundamental laws of marriage and sexual morality. But Hebrews 13:4 says, “Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.” Then Romans 1:32 says, “who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.” Any nation is ripe for God’s judgment when they not only tolerate violations of God’s moral law, but even “approve of those who practice them.” May God have mercy upon our nation! |
