In the previous verse, fools were identified by their lack of dependability. In this verse, a fool is identified by inconsistency, namely, the divergence between his mouth and his feet. Jesus condemned the Pharisees whose mouths were full of righteous platitudes while their hearts were full of wickedness. If we sincerely desire wisdom, we must remember that our words only have as much meaning as our walk gives testimony to the truth of our words. When we look at the landscape of modern Christian/culture interaction on things like same-sex marriage, we see that truth spoken by Christians on the pressing issues of the day seem to have little traction. It would be easy to attribute this to the blindness of a Godless society, and that is partially true. But another, more troubling explanation is that in many ways we have forfeited our right to be taken seriously in the marriage debate because we have not manifested the Biblical model of marriage that our words promote so vigorously. As Solomon identifies the traits of the fool, an honest reading quickly stops pointing the finger in some other direction and instead seeks God in repentance and help, that our mouths and feet may once again be aligned.
