“Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.” Proverbs 26:4-5

While wisdom dictates that we not be under the influence of fools, it also demands that we influence our environment for Godliness. The promotion of Godliness is intrinsic to the Christian walk. One simply cannot claim to be a follower of Christ and not be interested in influencing the world for righteousness. Therefore, we interact with fools. The goal of our interaction is to shine the light of truth, exposing the darkness of foolish thinking. It is important to understand that we are not promoting our personal light. This only leads to a haughty, judgmental version of light, which is actually not light at all. Instead, the goal is to promote the honor of Christ both by our example and by speaking truth in love. Speaking truth is often not well-received because the very nature of truth rebukes foolishness. This is exactly why Jesus was not popular; the hatred of His light was because fools love darkness rather than light, and light always exposes darkness. Scripture’s instruction regarding our rebuke of foolishness is that it must be done in meekness, considering our own propensity to foolishness. Yet, it must be done if we are to be faithful followers of Christ.
