We all desire to be faithful in crises. When the house is burning, we imagine sacrificing our lives to save our loved ones. When persecution comes, we imagine ourselves standing alone in honor to God. But here is what we need to understand: Crises cannot be scheduled, and crises don’t develop character as much as they reveal character. Trouble comes when we least expect it. It does not come with a practice period. When it comes, it’s there. The display of faithfulness in intense times of trouble is developed through faithfulness to God in the mundane and ordinary. It is like the development of muscles. I may imagine winning the arm wrestling competition at camp in front of throngs of screaming admirers, but it will only be imagination without the daily building of muscles in isolation. So it is with faithfulness in every sphere of life. “He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much.”
