Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 25:6-7

“Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men: For better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen.” Proverbs 25:6-7

This passage illustrates an important principle regarding the book of Proverbs. While the book is full of practical, common sense wisdom, it is incapable of producing lasting wisdom by simply being read. For the wisdom of Proverbs to be consistently applied, God-given faith is imperative. This particular instruction runs contrary to our sense of logic and self-obsession. We are taught by nature to promote self on every occasion. The scope of self promotion is nearly infinite. From the reality “star” whom makes a fool of himself for 15 seconds of fame to the argumentative voice who demands to be heard to the hours spent in front of the mirror to get every last hair in place, our thoughts are constantly consumed with self. Yet, faith responds differently. Faith believes that God wisely provides in every circumstance to meet our needs. And so, we have no need to push, manipulate, and manage our way into the position of prominence. Instead, we busy ourselves with the task in front of us, waiting with confidence that when it is our time to be in the presence of the king, God will open the way better than we ever could for ourselves.
