God told David that because of his sin with Bathsheba, the sword would never leave his house. In our reading today, we see that promise coming to fruition. Absalom steals the heart of the people. He gathers a group together to fight against David. David leaves Jerusalem. Absalom usurps the throne.
It is very important to think about how David responded when he faced this trial. One important factor to keep in mind is that he didn't accuse God. Also, we want to keep in mind how David made wise decisions during this time concerning who would stay in Jerusalem and who would travel with him.
One person in particular expressed support for David. He displayed great loyalty. We should have the same type of loyalty to God, no matter the circumstances. No matter how quickly our faith is challenged, we should stand like Ittai.
2Sa 15:21 And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the LORD liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be.
In death or life, Ittai will follow David. This is committment. Our dedication to God should be the same. As we look at our world today, we are faced with surprising events. It seems every few months a new city is faced with "race" riots. The citizens are looting stores and burning them down. The chaos is growing. In the words of one sports analyst, "We are living in a world which reminds you of a can of soda which is shaken up and ready to explode." How will you react as the perilous times grown? Will you like Ittai follow the king no matter the difficulties you face? Will your commitment to God be the same as the commitment of Ittai to David? Love the Lord with all your heart soul and mind. You will make the right decision. Just like Esther is days of old, we have been called by God to live for Him in such a time as this.
