God’s message to the wicked provides strong assurance to the righteous. His message is, “You are wasting your time.” This is a stunning assessment in light of the speedy progression of wicked policy and thought in our society. Every single day, another scenario arises in which darkness is celebrated as light, and light is discredited as darkness. And yet, all the wicked legislation, all the persecution, all the squelching of righteousness, all the judicial overreaches, all the celebration of evil, all of the arrows pointed toward God and His people are a colossal waste of time. This is true for two reasons. First, nothing can disrupt the power and purpose of God. While God’s people are the immediate recipients of evil intention, God is the real target. And the picture of God painted in Psalm 2 is of God sitting on the throne of the universe laughing at the futile attempts to dethrone Him. What an important picture for people of faith to maintain as evil swirls around. Secondly, evil intentions are a waste of time because the faith of God’s children is unquenchable. Neither legislation nor the sword can destroy faith. The just man always rises from the cascade of blows delivered by the evil aggressor because faith is authored, sustained, and brought to completion by God Himself. Solomon’s conclusion was consistent with Biblical prophecy of God’s eternal purpose – the wicked shall fall into mischief.
