We often emphasize that God’s word is right. We should also remind ourselves of how GOOD that it is. Solomon did not need to remind his son to eat honey in the same way that he would insist he eat Brussel sprouts. The goodness of the honey was obvious, and so the natural inclination was to reach for the honey. One sure sign of spiritual maturing is when the word of God becomes more like honey than Brussel sprouts. We reach for it because we are confident in its goodness. We delight in its commands because they bring us fellowship with Him, and fellowship with Him is like honey to the taste. Admittedly, this natural delight is not always the case, and so it is important to remind ourselves of the goodness of the knowledge of wisdom even when our inclination is to choose the temporary pleasure of sin. This is discipline of the mind and will. The good news is that the exercise of discipline ends delight. The finding of wisdom always ends in reward.
