Today my reading included Israel's battle with Benjamin.
When the children of Israel entered the Promised Land, they were not to make a league with any of the inhabitants of that land. The Gibeonites deceived Israel. Israel made a league with them.
The Gibeonites then became a thorn in the side of Israel. The Gibeonites caused them trouble often during their stay in Israel. Today in our reading is one of those times. A man from Ephraim came to Gibeah to find lodging. The men of Gibeah murdered his concubine. Therefore, the men of Israel came to repay Gibeah. The tribe of Benjamin which dwelt in Gibeah stood with the Gibeonites. The men of Benjamin we defeated. The tribe of Benjamin almost destroyed.
Today, we need to remember how one single moment of unfaithfulness caused much heartache for Israel. One moment of disobedience, because of being deceived hindered Israel for many years. Be careful of your actions. Be careful of the leagues you make. Follow God closely. Do not allow one single error in judgement to cause heartache for years to come. Commit your ways to the Lord. He will direct your paths.
