Jeremiah 23 is doctrinally to the Jews but we can take great application today (Rom 15:4) with what is going on with modern day pastors. "Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! Sam Jones use to say, " When the Lord says Woe, you better stop." Many pastors today are leading the sheep to lean pastures instead of green pastures. There truly is nothing new under the sun. What is true then is true today. We will find from the Scripture that there are things the corrupt pastors did in that day that they are doing today.
Concerning this same topic, Isaiah 56:11 is very telling. "Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough." Notice that the watchman or pastors who are supposed to be watchman (Heb 13:17) are called dumb dogs. I heard a preacher say one time, "A dog that can't see or hear can't warn anyone of anything."" The wolves (Acts 20:29) that are infesting todays churches need to be driven away by the barking of dogs." ~ John Lambert. Many of these modern pastors have gone to the pastors cemetary and received a D.D. which in many cases today could better stand for DUMB DOGS and they think this degree is a call to preach. Most come out of these institutes of higher learning (Gen 3) no longer believing the Book by which they got saved. They have no final authority and this attitude rubs off on their congregations. Brethren these things ought not so to be.
This attitude of no final authority is breeding a state of compromise and an attitude of sleeping on the part of Christians who ought to be awake (Rom 13:11) while we still have time to get the Gospel out. Lying down in the lap of Delilah got Samson blinded, and binded to sin that took him to a place that he couldn't get out of without the LORD's strength. This attitude of loving to slumber is prevelant today as most have hid their candle under the bed of laziness (Luke 8:16). We pastors need to take heed (1 Cor 10:12) because the sheep are not being fed today (John 21:15-17) in most churches. Teling two or three jokes and a story from your childhood is not preaching the word. Sheep need pure sheepfood which is the words of God (Matt 4:4). These words are preserved (Ps 12:6-7) in a book that we can get our hands on by the way. This book is the King James Bible. The scholars (Mal 2:12) might not believe it but a babe (Matt 11:25) can understand that God keeps his promises (Matt 24:35).
We shall look deeper into this subject at a later date but for today pray for the pastors, that those who are scattering will begin to gather.
