Today, my reading was Numbers 34 & 34. Think of the expanse of the Promised Land. God gave the children of Israel a wonderful gift. We read of the fertility of the land. We also recognize God gave them a land which was sufficient to meet their needs.
Also, in my reading today, I read of the cities of refuge. Two thoughts popped into my mind. First of all, we think of the refuge we find in Christ. We have broken the Law. We are worthy of death. Yet, we can find refuge in Christ. Of course, this is a deep thought which needs considerable development. However, we will settle with the thought of God providing refuge for the offender.
Another thought to consider is this, "19 The revenger of blood himself shall slay the murderer. " Notice how the one who is the revenger of blood is the one who shall slay the murderer. He shall exact the punishment. Now let's consider the Judgment of God. Of course, He is the Judge of all the earth. Also, He is the One who receives the judgment. 2nd Corinthians 5:19 To wit, thatGodwasinChrist, reconciling the world unto himself, notimputingtheirtrespasses unto them;and hath committedauntous the word of reconciliation. When God enacted the Judgment upon sin, He was in Christ receiving the judgment.
The thought of God passing judgment and then taking the judgment upon himself has always amazed me. He is the avenger of blood, and He is the city of refuge. May our hearts be drawn closer to the Lord as we recognize the depths both of the riches and wisdom of God in providing redemption for His people.
