Unlike most verses in Proverbs, this verse begins a grouped thought that continues through verse 21. It would be helpful to read these as a group. I want to focus today on two elements of this group, the audience and the speaker. Yes, Solomon writes to his son, but we are not just reading the personal letters of a man to his son. When wisdom speaks, it is not just an idea. In fact, “it” is the wrong pronoun. Wisdom is a person. Wisdom is Jesus Christ. We need to be reminded constantly that Christianity is not just principles to be mastered, but it is a relationship of discipleship with the God of heaven. The principles of Proverbs have power and are true because they come from the mind and mouth of God. God, who creates, empowers, and sustains all things, who is the one constant of history, communicates to man through His word! The audience – well, that is you, whoever you are, if you are listening. It is not just the young man or young woman who is in need of wisdom. The old, the middle aged, the established, the beginner, everyone, needs to heed the call to bow down (humility) and actively seek to hear and apply our hearts to what the God of heaven has to say. That he speaks in such clear and simple language, communicating wisdom so effectively, is reason more to voraciously approach Him with eager ear. Our approach to God should mimic Samuel: “Speak Lord, for thy servant heareth.”
