“The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the Lord shall fall therein.” Proverbs 22:14
This coming Sunday, millions will tune in to the Super Bowl, an event that is annually America’s most viewed television program. Over the years, the advertisements have become more anticipated than the game itself. And the bulk of the advertising will be built on the power of the allure of the strange woman. Advertising builds on this premise because it works. Therefore, we would do well to heed God’s thoughts in today’s verse. Sexual temptation is powerful. Its power lies in its promise of blessing. But God says this promise is a lie. He teaches us here that the end result of entertaining the temptress is that you get exactly what you bargain for, a pit reserved for beasts that destroy. When evil desire meets opportunity, judgment is clouded, and the pit is ignored. But the pit is always there. There has never been sexual sin that did not have devastating consequences. Mark it down. God’s ways always result in our true blessing. Man’s ways always end in a pit. Remember this as you decide whether to subject your mind to the advertisements this weekend.
